Primary Mathematics Curriculum Overview

Asia Singapore International School (ASIS)

Aim of Learning Mathematics

Mathematics contributes to the understanding of many disciplines and provides the foundation for many of today’s innovations and solutions. It also underpins many areas of our everyday activities, from making sense of information around us to making informed decisions about personal finances.

Primary Mathematics Curriculum

The Primary Mathematics curriculum is presented in three content areas: Number, Geometry, Statistics. The three content areas are all underpinned by Problem solving, which describes using skills and techniques and the application of strategies in solving problems. Mental strategies are also a key part of the Number content.

This curriculum focuses on theory, patterns, systems, functions and relationships so that learners can apply their mathematical knowledge and develop a holistic understanding of the subject. The Primary Mathematics curriculum framework provides a solid foundation upon which the later stages of education can be built.

For these reasons, the Primary Mathematics Syllabus aims to enable all students to:

  • acquire mathematical concepts and skills for everyday use and continuous learning in mathematics;
  • develop thinking, reasoning, communication, application and metacognitive skills through math problem solving; and build character and foster interest in mathematics.

Key Focus Areas

The syllabus emphasises the development of critical mathematical processes such as reasoning and communication by making explicit the learning experiences that students should have in the course of learning.  We endeavor to further improve the teaching and learning of mathematics at the primary level and ensure that the curriculum remains relevant and continues to prepare students well for learning of mathematics at the secondary level.

Key focus areas of this syllabus:

  1. Develop critical mathematical processes that support the development of 21st century competencies;
  2. Develop a greater awareness of the big ideas in mathematics that will deepen students’

understanding and appreciation of mathematics; and

  1. Give greater emphasis to the development of metacognitive skills to promote self-directed learning and reflection.

Qualities of Mathematics

Mathematics can be described as a study of the attributes, relationships, operations, algorithms, and applications of numbers and spaces at the very basic levels, and of abstract concepts at the more advanced levels. Mathematical concepts, related knowledge and methods, are products of insight, logical reasoning and critical thinking, and are often inspired by complex problem solving. Abstractions are what makemathematics a powerful tool for solving problems. Mathematics provides a language for communicoting the ideas and results of the discipline.

Themes and Developments

Based on the above description of the qualities of mathematics, four themes in the study of mathematics are derived.

Primary Science Curriculum Overview

Asia Singapore International School (ASIS)

1. SCIENCE CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK

The Science Curriculum Framework is based on the Policy Framework for the Teaching and Learning of Science. It is designed to prepare students to be effective citizens in an increasingly technologically-driven world. and analyzing data to answer questions and solve problems. It is based on three domains: knowledge, understanding, and application; skills and processes; and ethics and attitudes. The curriculum is designed to help students see science as meaningful and useful. It is grounded in knowledge, issues, and questions that relate to the roles played by science in daily life, society, and the environment.

Asia Singapore International School (ASIS)

The science curriculum is designed to help students become curious inquirers. It starts with the understanding that children are naturally curious and want to learn about the world around them. The science curriculum builds on this curiosity and helps students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to explore the natural and physical world.

The ultimate goal of the science curriculum is for students to enjoy science and to see it as a valuable tool for understanding the world around them.

The teacher plays a central role in fostering a culture of inquiry in the science classroom. Teachers of science are responsible for sharing the excitement and value of science with their students. They also act as facilitators and role models for the inquiry process.

Teachers create a learning environment that encourages and challenges students to develop their sense of inquiry. Teaching and learning approaches are centered around the student as an inquirer.

The following table shows the description of each domain which underscores the practice of science:

Knowledge, Understanding and ApplicationSkills and ProcessesEthics and Attitudes
  • Scientific phenomena, facts, concepts and principles

  • Scientific vocabulary, terminology and conventions

  • Scientific instruments and apparatus including techniques and aspects of safety

  • Scientific and technological applications
Skills

  • 21ST CENTURY COMPETENCIES AND SCIENTIFIC LITERACY

    The 218t Century Competencies
The 21st Century Competencies Framework is a guide for how to educate students to succeed in the 21st century world. It focuses on developing students into confident people, self-directed learners, concerned citizens, and active contributors. These are the qualities that students need to thrive and make a positive impact in a world that is constantly changing.

    Asia Singapore International School (ASIS)

The most important skills for the 21st century are civic literacy, global awareness and cross-cultural skills, critical and inventive thinking, and information and communication skills.

    Scientific Literacy

Science education for the future should not only teach students the basic concepts of science, but also the skills and knowledge they need to use science to understand and solve real-world problems. Students need to be able identify questions, gather and analyze evidence, and draw conclusions based on evidence. They also need to understand the nature of science and how it is used to shape our world. Finally, students need to develop the ethics and attitudes necessary to engage in science-related issues as informed citizens.

Science education that focuses on these goals will help students develop the following skils and habits of mind:

    • Reasoning and analytical skills
    • Decision and problem solving skills
    • Flexibility to respond to different contexts
    • An open and inquiring mind

These skills are essential for sucess in the 21st century world, and they are aligned with the desired 21st century competencies.

    2. AIMS

The Primary Science Syllabus aims to:

    • Provide students with experiences that build on their interests and curiosity about the world around them.
This goal is about making science leaming relevant and engaging for students. It is about helping students to see how science connects to their own lives and to the world around them.

    • Provide students with basic scientific terms and concepts to help them understand themselves and the world around them.
This goalis about giving students the foundation they need to understand science. It is about teaching the basic concepts and vocabulary of science so that they can make sense of the world around them.

    • Provide students with opportunities to develop the skills, habits of mind, and attitudes necessary for scientific inquiry.
This goal is about helping students to become scientists. It is about teaching them the skills and habits of mind that they need to conduct experiments, analyze data, and draw conclusions. Itis about helping them to develop a posititude towards towards science and to appreciate the value of scientific inquiry.

    • Prepare students to use scientific knowledge and methods in making personal decisions.
This goal is about helping students to apply science to their oves. It is about ching them how to use scientic knowledge to make informed decisions about their health, their environment, and their future.

    • Help students appreciate how science influences people and the environment.
This goal is about helping students to see the big picture. It is about helping them to understand how science has shaped our world and how it continues to influence our lives.
